These particular works are some examples of what I call my abstract works, although many of my other series artworks are also of an abstract nature.
Abstraction is a useful tool in an artists' arsenal of creative techniques. It allows your mind to capture, sometimes in an instant an idea or a thing.
One can of course code very complex ideas and information into what may at first appear simply squiggles and splotches of paint or pixels.
ABSTRACT ATOM [2000] : This series was a result of my research into atomic particle theory and quantum mechanical theory. The 3-D sculpture presents the idea that atoms are made of fields of interacting energy.
Who truely knows what the true nature of the building blocks of matter and reality are?
I love the exploration and sharing of the ideas and this series/project is one of of those playful trips into knowledge.
ABSTRACT CUBES [1998] : These works were one of my early experiments with 3-D modelling and sculpting. These prints are stills from a sculptural sequence that I have produced (as yet unreleased).
The cubes consist of hand drawn ink sketches and 3-D modelled cube sculptures. Although this was primarily an experiment in technique and technology, the outcome has a cool visual aspect.
Not everything has to be about something, pure visual playful art is equally important and it can become revered for that alone.
So this is one of those kind of artworks of mine, not merely a pretty thing but also a captured moment of learning and refining techniques that would come in handy a little further down the track.
SPIRIT [2001] : This is my portrait of the soul or spirit, that which you call you and I call me.
It is me trying to represent the spirit, the spark of consciousness that is (in) each of us, the eternal and infinitesimal point of conscient and non-material light of the soul.
ABSTRACT SWIRL [2003] : I had been looking into ways of representing different dimensions and had previously done some paintings and drawings on the subject. This was one of my experiments using digital tools to try and get that feeling of layers and alternate planes of existance.
BEYOND THE SURFACE OF REALITY [1996] : I have always had a sense of the layers of reality permeating our shared material reality and I like creating images that allude or refer to that nature of existence. These are some of my artworks from a larger collection.
I think it is important to have little reminders around that remind us that what most of us consider to be reality, is but a small piece of a much larger reality. It is easy to forget that, and we have got to make sure we keep remembering that there is that deeper more complex nature to reality beyond the physical material world of our waking reality.
I'm talking about the here and now of our material world, intersecting with the dream world, intersecting with the world of our memory, intersecting with our own spiritual-metaphysical-consciousness and intersecting with the universal consciousness.
CITYSCAPE [1996] : A quick little sketch of a view across the rooftops of the skyscrapers of Perth, Western Australia.
COMMUNICATION [2002] : These are a couple of what I'd describe as conversational rants, in painting form.
I had been having a conversation with a couple of friends about economics, politics and education and I had kept some notes and sketches from those encounters to put to later good use.
CONNECTION [1996] : This painting is about representing the connection that we all share with each other. The 'arcs' represent the connections of light that connect us all in the expanse that is existence, represented by the black void background. The perspective is of a small cropped section of a larger bigger 'picture'.
CONVERGENCE [1996] : I like the concept of us human beings emanating light from within, this drawing was me imagining four people in near proximity to one another and how their fields of light energy might appear.
As with some of my other artworks this is one of those that is a subtle reminder to the notion of something else.
INFORMATION SUPER HIGHWAY [1997] : I was responding to a quote I heard or read from someone who suggested that the information super highway was leading us all towards a chasm of oblivion.
I was seeing it as a super highway to the end of the enslavement of humanity !
FINALLY !
If us good guys could use all this amazing technology to empower and inspire humanity, a new vision for our world could be realised.
So this artwork is about getting to that end point as a civilisation, where the Old World Slave Paradigm ends, and a new, perhaps perilous and exciting way of existing can be realised.
I jumped that chasm to escape the prison planet in 1997.
This is a record of my departure from that old world, towards freedom and illumination.
LOOKING TO THE FUTURE, LOOKING AT THE PAST [1997] : There are many sayings, I made this one into an artwork.
The message or thought I am conveying is that old one, that if you're looking to the future and making plans, it's wise to do it with an eye on the past.
There's no need to repeat others mistakes, let alone our own.
The large white border to the left is the window frame of NOW.
The smaller white frame in the right top is the PAST, which can be visualised and refered to for good use in the present.
POEM [1997] : While I was researching my book on the renowned French poet-voyant Arthur Rimbaud I came across an artwork that someone had made inspired by his Vowels poem.
This artwork is what that picture inspired me to draw. The sculptural forms have resonances of letters and book forms. These forms have a sub-conscious likeness to the word LOVE, although I have just exposed that subtlety here for the purposes of explanation.
QUESTON MARK [1997] : I like the idea of appropriating used objects and themes, and making something that is uniquely mine from them.
The humble question mark. We see it everywhere and use it in our unspoken vocabulary every day. It has played an important role in my own life and I wanted to make it into an artwork to give it it's due status.
Questioning is vitally important to us humans.
If you don't you're dead meat and ripe for exploiting.
REBIRTH [1997] : The concepts of birth, reincarnation and or rebirth are pretty high on the scales of human experiences.
The figure in the centre of the painting is emerging through the void (blackness) which intersects some other element of reality to either side, the lighter regions. It's all pretty magical really, being born and whatever comes next, depending on what you believe.
SUNSET [1997] : Just a little sketch of a sunset. I love the Sun, not much else to say really.
TURNTABLE [1997] : Music has been an important part of my life, as it is for most of us. I love old record players and playing vinyl records.
I love the crackle and the sound quality. I love the process of playing LP's on turntables. So this is another one of those artworks I made for me. Not everything is for somebody else. Some of what I do is for myself and my walls.
